Opening of the Hatchery for Eggs for Congo

The event brought together government representatives, the Dutch Embassy, industry partners, poultry farmers, and stakeholders from across the value chain. For Hendrix Genetics, the project demonstrates how genetics, technical expertise, and long-term partnerships can contribute to sustainable growth in emerging markets.

For those involved from the beginning, the opening represents the realization of a vision that started several years ago and has now evolved into a fully operational poultry business capable of supplying high-quality chicks to farmers across the country.

The new hatchery has an initial production capacity of 3.2 million day-old chicks per year, with expansion plans to exceed 6 million chicks annually from 2027 onwards.

The project also includes a parent stock farm with capacity for approximately 30,000 parent stock birds, enabling local production of hatching eggs and significantly reducing dependence on imported supply.

Using ISA Brown and SASSO Rainbow X genetics, Eggs for Congo will serve both commercial poultry producers and smallholder farmers. Chicks are vaccinated at the hatchery under strict biosecurity protocols, ensuring a reliable source of high-quality poultry stock for the local market.

What makes this project unique is that it goes far beyond chick production. Eggs for Congo is building an integrated poultry value chain that includes:

• Farmer training

• Market development

This creates a sustainable foundation for long-term growth of the poultry industry in the DRC.

The project originated through collaboration between Congolese and Dutch entrepreneurs, supported by the Dutch Embassy and various public-private development initiatives.

What started as a commercial layer project evolved into a broader vision aimed at strengthening food security and agricultural development through local production.

The core philosophy has remained unchanged:

Sustainable poultry development cannot rely solely on importing chicks. It requires local production capacity, technical knowledge, training, and strong partnerships throughout the value chain.

Today, that vision is becoming reality.

The DRC represents one of the most significant poultry growth opportunities in Africa.

With a population exceeding 110 million people and annual population growth of approximately 3%, demand for affordable animal protein continues to increase rapidly.

Current poultry consumption remains relatively low due to limited historical availability of quality poultry products. Even modest increases in consumption create enormous market opportunities.

To illustrate the potential:

Kinshasa Alone

With a population of approximately 20 million people, consumption of only:

• One egg per person per week
• One kilogram of poultry meat per person per month

would require:

• Around 1 billion table eggs annually
• Approximately 300,000 tonnes of live broiler production annually

National Potential

Across the entire country, similar consumption levels would translate into demand for approximately:

• 5.7 billion eggs per year
• More than 1.3 million tonnes of poultry meat annually

These figures highlight both the scale of the opportunity and the importance of developing local production capacity.

The inauguration ceremony emphasized a shared ambition: building a poultry sector capable of supporting thousands of farmers while improving access to affordable protein.

The longer-term objective is to establish a network of more than 2,000 poultry producer partners, ranging from family farms and cooperatives to large-scale commercial operations.

The expected impact includes:
